The College Hockey Discussion List Poll for January 6, 1993:

Teams were given 15 points for a first-place vote, 14 for a second-place
vote, and so on down to 1 point for a fifteenth-place vote. Total first-
place votes are in parentheses.

The new year's biggest winner is Boston University, which, thanks in part to
winning the Badger Hockey Showdown, jumped seven places since the last
HOCKEY-L poll two weeks ago. The un-merry Christmas award goes to RPI, who
dropped out of the Top 15 after losing their own tournament (Miami didn't
have a great holiday either, slipping four spots).

And, since I'm always looking for things to keep my mind off my work, I've
added a column to the composite poll called "Range", which indicates the
range of votes received by each of the top 15 teams. Harvard, for example,
was ranked as high as #1 and as low as #12, which probably shows that
HOCKEY-L doesn't quite know what to make of the Crimson yet.

Here's this week's East-West split. Although there were only two Western
responses, it's interesting to note that Harvard and St. Lawrence did much
better with Eastern voters than Western voters, while Lake Superior got
considerably higher marks from the West. That may not be surprising, but
Alaska-Fairbanks' performance is -- the Nanooks were all but ignored by the
West, but the East has them tenth.

     Eastern responses: Western responses:

     1. Maine (7) 119 1. Maine (2) 30
     2. Michigan 106 2. Lake Superior 26
     3. Harvard (1) 99 3. Michigan 24
     4. Minnesota-Duluth 94 Minnesota-Duluth 24
     5. Boston University 83 5. Miami 23
     6. Lake Superior 81 6. Boston University 17

     15. Western Michigan 21 15. Alaska-Fairbanks 5

The composite of polls and ratings has a new look for the new year. I've
added CHODR to the other rating systems (TCHCR and RPICH), and to accom-
modate the new arrival, I've split the composite into two parts -- one
covering the polls (including HOCKEY-L), and the other covering the ratings.
Just for fun, I've also created two Tadpolls, one for the polls and the
other for the ratings (I'm calling this one "Tad-rate", though whether it's
a "tad" better than the various rating systems is open to debate).

Once again, the poll composite is a little boring, as the top ten (or
eleven) teams are almost identical. As usual, though, the "other" polls are
not taking any notice of Alaska-Fairbanks.

In the ratings composite below, the teams below the line are those that
finished in the top 15 of at least one of TCHCR, RPICH, and CHODR, but did
not make the HOCKEY-L poll.

Now, this guy is a little more intriguing. The three ratings are quite
close for some teams (none of them particularly like Minnesota or Denver),
but there are some wild differences in some cases between TCHCR/RPICH (these
two usually almost agree) and CHODR. Alaska-Fairbanks (that team again)
gets a lot more respect from TCHCR and RPICH (not to mention the HOCKEY-L
poll) than they do from CHODR, and the same is true of Western Michigan.
CHODR weighs in with its #3 team, Clarkson, which finishes way the hell down
in TCHCR (#27) and RPICH (#34). This should spice up those conversations
around the water cooler...
