It's not a complete surprise that they didn't work to avoid
second-round intraconference games. My attention was drawn last week
to the championships manual on the web at
http://www.ncaa.org/library/handbooks/2001_ice_hockey.pdf

There I noticed that first-round intraconference matchups are to be
avoided, but no mention is made of second-round ones. (Of course, my
impression was that this was never in the championships manual, but
was done anyway.)

Now, what I don't understand is why CC was sent East instead of
Wisconsin and Providence went West instead of SLU. I guess the former
can be attributed to attendance, but the latter clearly wasn't to
avoid a second-round HE game, since one of those is possible anyway.

BTW, Mike, shouldn't you be annoyed that the NCAA has made another
unpublicized policy change?
