You gotta be kidding.
 
The great dislike for Notre Dame has little to do with any religious
affiliation. It's akin to the dislike people have for Michigan, or any
other team that has enjoyed oodles of success and financial gain since the
dawn of time.
 
Sports Illustrated conducted a poll a while back, to see how many fans knew
whether particular schools had a religious affiliation or not. They stuck
with the "big" sports schools like Notre Dame, Boston College, Michigan,
Duke, Indiana etc. had.
 
Number one was Notre Dame, where only two-thirds of those answering the
poll knew it had some kind of religious background. I don't remember the
other numbers, save Boston College -- less than 20% of those polled
answered that it maintained a religious affiliation.
