If I had known, I would have gotten this out before the fact, but
Mike Grier was the subject of ESPN's "Cover Story" on the 6:30 SportsCenter
last night. Pretty decent piece, with snippets of interviews with Grier,
his parents, and Jack Parker. One of the things mentioned is how Grier has
the NHL marketers salivating. If he makes it with the St. Louis Blues,
he'll be the first African-American to play in the NHL. (That's what the
piece said, and I haven't yet been able to come up with any others...Graeme
Townsend was born in Jamaica if I remember correctly. Willy O'Rhee was the
first black man to play in the NHL, a defenseman with the Bruins in the
50s. I guess he wasn't American). Grier's NHL idol is not Grant Fuhr, but
Eric Lindros, and he tries to pattern his play after Lindros.

ESPN has a habit of sometimes replaying cover stories from time to
time, so you may want to keep an eye out, especially this weekend. (And I
have this dreadful fear that last night was in fact the replay, this whole
subject has been posted to the list, and I somehow missed it...if that's
true, I'm sorry).
