HUSKIES RETURN HOME TO HOST NORTH DAKOTA THIS WEEKEND

This Week: The Michigan Technological University hockey team will host the
University of North Dakota in a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey
Association series this weekend at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena (4,200).
Friday's (Jan. 7) faceoff is set for 7:35 p.m. (EST), while Saturday's
(Jan. 8) rematch will begin at 7:05 p.m.

On Radio: All Michigan Tech games can be heard live on WZRK radio, 93.5 FM.
Bob Olson, the dean of broadcasters in the WCHA, is in his 24th season as
the voice of the Huskies. Volunteer assistant coach Darcy Way is back for
his fifth year providing color commentary.

The Records: MTU is 9-8-2 on the season overall and 6-7-1 in the WCHA. Last
weekend, MTU went 1-1 at the 30th annual Great Lakes Invitational and
finished third. North Dakota is 9-8-1 overall and 7-6-1 in the WCHA. The
Sioux have been idle since Dec. 19.

The Coaches: Bob Mancini (Colorado College, 1982) is in his third year
behind the bench at MTU. He owns a 39-50-12 record at the school and in
four-plus years as a college head coach sports a 75-82-24 mark. Dean Blais
(Minnesota, 1977) is in his first season as head coach at North Dakota. He
owns a 9-8-1 career record.

The Series: Michigan Tech and North Dakota will meet for the 183rd and
184th times this weekend in Houghton, Mich. In the all-time series, which
began during the 1947-48 season, North Dakota holds a 95-80-7 advantage.

About North Dakota: North Dakota is led offensively by junior forward
Teeder Wynne, who in 18 games has 13 goals and 14 assists. Other top Sioux
point getters include junior defenseman Nick Naumenko (5-18--23), sophomore
forward Kevin Hoogsteen (8-11--19), and senior forward Scott Kirton
(4-12--16). In goal, sophomore Toby Kvalevog has logged the majority of the
minutes. He owns a 5-5-1 record, to go with a 4.51 goals against average
and an .876 saves percentage. Junior Kevin Powell (2-1-0, 4.96, .840) and
senior Jeff Lembke (2-2-0, 5.56, .845) have also seen duty in net for UND.
The Sioux power play is operating at a 17.1 percent clip (20-113), while
opponents are scoring at a 32.7 percent rate (35-107).

Coach Mancini on the North Dakota Series: "I think North Dakota is one of
the surprises in the WCHA this year. Dean Blais has done an excellent job
and deserves a lot of credit. We're looking forward to getting back home
after playing our last four games away from home. I thought we did some
good things in our last game against Cornell and we'll carry that over to
our series with North Dakota."

Huskies Hints: Michigan Tech's series with North Dakota this weekend will
be its only regular-season meeting against the Fighting Sioux . . . Senior
left wing and captain Brent Peterson (Thunder Bay, Ont.) gained his second
career hat trick last Friday (Dec. 30) against Cornell in the third-place
game at the Great Lakes Invitational. Peterson's hat trick was in natural
fashion. He now has 72 career goals, just three short of moving into MTU's
all-time top 10 . . . The Peterson brothers have been busy at the GLI the
last two years. Sophomore center Kyle Peterson had a three-goal hat trick
in the third-place game at the 1993 GLI, while brother Brent followed up
with a three-goal natural hat trick in the third-place game at this year's
event . . . Sophomore defenseman Dave Dupont (Cumberland, R.I.) broke a
10-game pointless streak with a three-assist effort against Cornell last
Friday (Dec. 30) in the third-place game at the GLI . . . Senior left wing
Brent Peterson's (Thunder Bay, Ont.) three-goal effort against Cornell at
the GLI marked his first multi-goal game of the season . . . Sophomore
goaltender Luciano Caravaggio (Etobicoke, Ont.) has started each of MTU's
19 games this season . . . Junior center Pat Mikesch (Hancock, Mich.) had
his best game, in terms of points, against Cornell last Friday (Dec. 30)
with three assists. The three-assist effort marked Mikesch's third
multi-assist game of the season . . . MTU will look to break a four-game
home losing streak Friday (Jan. 6) against North Dakota . . . Junior
defenseman Jason Wright (Thunder Bay, Ont.) played in his 100th career game
last Thursday (Dec. 29) against Michigan . . . Senior right wing Randy
Stevens (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) was engaged to Jodi Coon of Hancock,
Mich., over the Christmas holidays. Since returning from his shoulder
injury on Dec. 2, Stevens has points in four of MTU's six games. He had one
goal and one assist against Cornell last Friday (Dec. 30) . . . Freshman
forward Austyn Kryzer (Afton, Minn.) broke a 10-game pointless streak with
a goal and an assist against Cornell last Friday (Dec. 30) . . . MTU's 13-0
loss to Michigan in semifinal action at the GLI last Thursday (Dec. 29)
marked the worst loss for a Tech team since Jan. 5, 1954, when the Huskies
were defeated 15-1 at Denver.
