As promised, my opinionated comments (for what their worth)

First, one thing I forgot from the box score:

Referees: Joe Kelly, Bill Stewart; Linesman: Larry Legault

I have more detailed notes from the second and third periods than the second.

Mike McCourt opened the scoring for SLU at 2:12 with a power play goal from the
slot. Colgate responded 37 seconds later to tie the game. Colgate scored to
take the lead at 15:55, and SLU tied the game back up with less than 3 minutes
to go in the period.

Then the floodgates broke. 13 seconds in, Earl Cronan made the score 3-2 for
the Red (Maroon?) Raiders by deflecting Rod Pamenter's shot from the point.
At 11:50 Jason Craig passed the puck from the right faceoff circle to Bruce
Gardiner who was in the high slot and made no mistake, 4-2 'Gate. Then came
the goal that really killed SLU. While killing a penalty, Mike Harder stole
the puck from an SLU point man at his own blue line and raced the length of
the ice, and scored while sliding into the net. At 15:22, Rod Pamenter made
Jon Bracco (SLU's backup) the most popular man in Appleton Arena by scoring
from out in front on a pass from behind the net by Greg Lewis.

Colgate added a power play goal at 16:50 of the third, when Rod Pamenter
shot from the point. I thought it bounced off someone, but it might have been
a Saint defender.

St. Lawrence is a young team and it showed tonight. I think Coach Marsh has
less hair today than yesterday. They were turning the puck over far more
than is healthy for a team. SLU turnovers led directly to at least 2 Colgate
goals. There was one in the first, and the short-handed goal in the second.
They might have been able to get away with it against Dartmouth, but against
a team that is decent, it just can't be done. This team also seems to want
Spagnoletti to bail them out, he did once on a brilliant save 4 minutes into
the second period. The problem was he only made 5 other saves in the period.
He was clearly having a bad game, there were a couple of goals that he should
have had.

Of course, he can't be expected to do everything. SLU seemed to be
unable to clear anyone out from the front of the net. I would think that guys
like Joel Prpic (6-6 200) and Brian McCarthy (6-3 200) should be able to do
that. I will admit, though, that I didn't keep track of plus/minus, so I don't
know how many goals they were on the ice for.

The Saints seemed to be reluctant to shoot. The worst case was 4 minutes into
the third period, when Mike McCourt was on the right side of a 3-on-1 and did
nothing with the puck. He just skated with it around the net.

The officiating was not bad. They did tend to let things go quite a bit. They
probably should have started clamping down on roughing late in the third,
but an altercation broke out at 18:20, which led to coincidental minors, but
probably could have led to a lot more, since all 10 players on the ice seemed
to be involved. The game overall was chippier than I have come to expect from
college hockey, but the refs were consistent in letting quite a bit go. If
there is a maximum number of penalties a player can get, Bruce Gardiner was
close to it, with 4 penalties (8 PIM).

Well, that's all, you can wake up now (if you haven't hit 'n' already).

See you later,
John
