Out here in the East, things aren't much different. The Hockey East conference
takes all 8 of its teams into the postseason (so, cheer up Northeastern fans,
there's still hope).

The ECAC used to be the most competitive league in this respect. Until last
year, only the top 8 teams out of 12 (67%) made it to the playoffs. Last
year, the ECAC added a one game shootout, where the 7th & 10th place teams
play each other, as well as the 8th & 9th place teams. The winners then
join the top six teams in the usual playoff format.
