I also remembered seeing something about the renewal of a Division II hockey
championship, and I went back and found the article on the subject from the
JunJune 24, 1992 issue of _The NC$$ News_.

PLANS MADE FOR DIVISION II TITLE SERIES

For the first time since 1984, the NC$$ will sponsor a Division II Men's Ice
Hockey Championship.

At its June 15-18 meeting in Kansas City, Missouri, the Divisions II and III
Men's Ice Hockey Committee voted to recommend to the NC$$ Executive Committee
a format in which the top two schools nationally will be selected to
participate in the 1993 Division II championship. The championship was
authorized by a vote of the Association's membership at the 1992 NC$$
Convention.

The championship, involving two games between the teams plus a deciding
minigame if needed, would be played on the campus of one of the competing
institutions either March 12-13 or March 13-14.

From 1978 to 1984, the NC$$ sponsored a Division II championship in ice hockey
and crowned five different national champions. The University of Massachusetts
at Lowell won three titles. Merrimack College, Mankato State University,
Rochester Institute of Technology and Bemidji State University each won one
championship.

The only schools set to sponsor Division II hockey in 1992-93 that
participated in the tournament between 1978 and 1984 are New Hampshire College
and Bemidji State. The other eligible schools are American International
College, Assumption College, Bentley College, Mercyhurst College, Quinnipiac
College, St. Anselm College, St. Michael's College, and Stonehill College.

*** END OF STORY ***

In other related news, at the same meeting, the committee decided to conduct a
national Division II poll that would include five teams. The first poll would
be released December 7, 1992. The following polls would be released weekly
beginning January 11. The two regional Division III hockey polls also would
follow this schedule.

I do not know if this clears anything up, but at least now we have the
official NC$$ perspective, whatever that is worth. :-)
