USA HOCKEY NAMES COACHING STAFFS FOR
U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL - '95
 
 
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Hockey today announced the
coaching staffs for the four ice hockey teams that will
compete at the U.S. Olympic Festival - +95, set for July 21-
30 in Boulder, Colorado Springs and Denver, Colo.
 
The announcement was made by USA Hockey Executive Director
David Ogrean (Colorado Springs), USA Hockey Director of
National Teams and International Activities Art Berglund
(Colorado Springs) and National Governing Body Co-
Commissioners Lou Vairo (Colorado Springs) and Larry Reid
(Rumford, R.I.).
 
Ice hockey at the U.S. Olympic Festival - +95 will be played
July 24-30 at the historic Denver Coliseum, with 80 of
America+s top players from the college, junior, high school
and prep school ranks participating.  Of those 80 players, 40
are candidates for the 1996 U.S. National Junior Team
(players under the age of 20), while the remaining 40 are
candidates for the 1995 USA Select Team (players age 20 and
older).  Complete rosters will be announced June 23, with
each team comprised of 10 players from both the under-20 and
20-and-over age categories.
 
The four head coaches - John Harrington (St. Cloud, Minn.) of
Saint John+s University, Mark Mazzoleni (Oxford, Ohio) from
Miami University, Don Cahoon (Marblehead, Mass.) of Princeton
University and Don Lucia (Colorado Springs) from Colorado
College - bring 25 years of combined collegiate head-coaching
experience to the U.S. Olympic Festival - +95.
 
Team North
 
John Harrington completed his second season as head coach of
NCAA Division III Saint John+s University in 1994-95, leading
the Johnnies to a 10-12-3 overall record and a 7-7-2 mark in

the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  In his
first season as head coach, Harrington was honored as the
MIAC Coach of the Year after guiding Saint John+s to a 14-11-
1 overall record that included an 11-4-1 mark in conference
play.
 
A member of both the 1980 and 1984 U.S. Olympic Ice Hockey
Teams, Harrington served as an assistant coach at the
University of Denver from 1984-90 and St. Cloud State
University from 1990-93 before taking over as head coach at
Saint John+s in 1993-94.  In addition to his collegiate
coaching experience, Harrington has twice been an assistant
coach at the U.S. Olympic Festival (1983 and 1990).
 
Assisting Harrington will be Grant Standbrook (Orono, Maine),
who recently completed his seventh season as an assistant
coach at the University of Maine.  Since joining the Black
Bears+ coaching staff in 1988-89, Standbrook has helped guide
the University of Maine to a 218-60-18 overall record that
includes a 42-1-2 mark and the school+s first NCAA Division I
National Championship in 1992-93.  Standbrook+s coaching
background also includes a five-year stint as head coach at
Dartmouth College and 12 seasons as an assistant coach at the

University of Wisconsin.  He was an assistant coach with the
1976 U.S. Olympic Ice Hockey Team and the 1974 and 1975 U.S.
National Teams.
 
 
Team South
 
In his first season as head coach at Miami University, Mark
Mazzoleni led the Redskins to an 18-15-6 overall record that
included a 13-8-6 slate in the Central Collegiate Hockey
Association.  Prior to taking over at Miami, Mazzoleni served
as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the
University of Minnesota from 1991-94.  He was head coach at
the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point from 1985-91, where
he led the Pointers to three consecutive NCAA Division III
National Championships and was chosen as the Northern
Collegiate Hockey Association Coach of the Year in 1988-89,
1989-90 and 1990-91.  Mazzoleni began his coaching career in
1981-82 as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois-
Chicago, where he spent four seasons.
 
Mazzoleni will be assisted by Dave Laurion (Fairbanks,
Alaska), who recently completed his second season as head

coach at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.  In his first
season as head coach, Laurion led the Nanooks to a 24-13-1
overall mark that established a school record for victories
in a single season.  Laurion served as an assistant coach for
the University of Alaska-Fairbanks for eight seasons before
being named head coach in 1993-94.  As a player, Laurion
participated in two U.S. Olympic Festivals (1982 and 1983),
helping lead Team North to the gold medal in 1982.
 
 
Team East
 
Don +Toot+ Cahoon completed his fourth season as head coach
at Princeton University in 1994-95, leading the Tigers to the
most successful season in the 91-year history of the men+s
ice hockey program.  Princeton finished with an 18-13-4
overall record, marking the first winning season for the
Tigers in 27 years.  Princeton also posted a 9-10-3 regular-
season record in the Eastern College Athletic Conference and
advanced to the championship game of the ECAC Tournament for
the first time in school history.
 
Prior to coming to Princeton, Cahoon served as an assistant

coach at Boston University on three occasions + 1974-79,
1987-88 and 1990-91, helping guide the Terriers to the NCAA
Division I National Championship in 1977-78.  Cahoon also
served as head coach at Norwich University (1979-82) and
Lehigh (1973-74).  Following his stint at Norwich, Cahoon
joined the Austrian Ice Hockey Federation as the director of
hockey operations and head coach of the Vienna Ice Hockey
Club, guiding the team to a 23-13-2 record in 1981-82.  He
returned to the United States the following year as an
assistant coach at the University of Lowell, where he
remained until 1987.  As a player, Cahoon was a member of the
silver medal-winning 1972 U.S. National Team.
 
Assisting Cahoon will be United States Military Academy head
coach Rob Riley (West Point, N.Y.), who recently competed his
ninth season at the helm of the Army program.  Riley led his
squad to a 20-13-1 overall record in 1994-95, marking the
best performance by an Army ice hockey team since 1983-84.
Prior to becoming head coach in 1986-87, Riley served as
associate head coach at Army in 1985-86 and was head coach at
Babson College from 1983-85.  He was also an assistant coach
at St. Lawrence University from 1980-83 and was an assistant
coach and head coach of the junior varsity at Boston College

from 1978-80.  On an international level, Riley was an
assistant coach for the United States at the 1989 and 1991
Winter World University Games.
 
Team West
 
In his second season as head coach at Colorado College, Don
Lucia led the Tigers to a 30-12-1 overall record and an
automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament in 1994-95,
establishing a school record for most victories in a single
season.  Under Lucia+s direction, Colorado College has
captured two consecutive Western Collegiate Hockey
Association regular-season titles and posted a two-year
overall record of 53-23-6.  Lucia received the prestigious
Spencer Penrose Award as National Coach of the Year in 1993-
94 after leading the Tigers to a 23-11-5 overall record that
included their first WCHA regular-season championship in 37
years.
 
Prior to taking over as head coach at Colorado College, Lucia
spent six seasons (1987-93) as head coach at the University
of Alaska-Fairbanks, where he posted four winning seasons and
an overall record of 101-99-10.  Lucia also served as an
assistant coach at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks from
1981-85 and the University of Alaska-Anchorage from 1985-87.
He has been involved with USA Hockey+s Summer Development
Program for seven years and served as an assistant coach for
the U.S. Select 17 Team in both 1993 and 1994.
 
Lucia will be assisted by Joe Baldarotta (Stevens Point,
Wis.), who completed his fourth season as head coach at the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1994-95.  The 1992-
93 NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year, Baldarotta
has built an 80-34-16 overall record while at the helm of the
UW-Stevens Point program, including a 13-13-7 mark and an
eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs
this season.  During his four seasons as head coach at UW-
Stevens Point, Baldarotta has led the Pointers to two
Northern Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season and
post-season championships and one NCAA Division III National
Championship.  Prior to being named head coach in 1991-92,
Baldarotta served as the team+s top assistant for five
seasons under Mark Mazzoleni, helping lead the Pointers to
three consecutive NCAA Division III National Championships.
