* SANDHOLM OF UMASS LOWELL NAMED TOP SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IN HOCKEY EAST *
* 39 PLAYERS SELECTED TO LEAGUE ALL-ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL *

North Andover, Mass. - Ryan Sandholm from the University of
Massachusetts Lowell has been chosen as the top scholar-athlete for
the 1994-95 Hockey East academic year. Sandholm leads a group of 39
student-athletes from the league's nine schools that were recognized
for their academic and athletic accomplishments. The announcement
was made by Hockey East Commissioner Robert M. DeGregorio, Jr.

Sandholm, a Liberal Arts Major from Campbell River, British Columbia,
compiled a grade point average of 3.758 to earn the league's highest
academic honor. The sophomore closed out his second year at UMass
Lowell by earning a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the spring
semester.

Three Hockey East student-athletes were also named recipients of the
league's Distinguished Scholar Award which is awarded to those
individuals that earn honor roll status for four consecutive years.
Boston University's Derek Herlofsky (Minneapolis, MN) and Ken Rausch
(Danbury, CT), along with Merrimack College's Mark Cornforth (Montreal,

and Rausch (3.26) helped Boston University win the 1995 NCAA Division I
national championship, the Hockey East Tournament and the Beanpot

Of particular pride for me as a Merrimack alumnus are the following
notes:

* For the third straight season, Merrimack leads all HE schools in
players placed on the Hockey East Academic Honor Roll.
* Merrimack's 10 players placed on the HEAHR is a new HE record. The
Warriors placed 9 players on the HEAHR each of the previous two
seasons. No other school has ever placed more than 7.
* Merrimack has placed a total of 41 players on the HEAHR since it
began in 1989, more than any other school.
* Mark Cornforth joins Quentin Fendelet and Guy Ragault as the third
Warrior to be named Distinguished Scholar, more than any other school.
* HE All Rookie Team forward Casey Kesselring leads the team with a
3.63 GPA, fourth best in HE, in Computer Science (my major). I
guess Dr Maxey is teaching him well. :-)

Congratulations to all of the honorees and schools!
