Here are some other states;

Texas  vs.  Texas-El Paso (UTEP)
Alabama vs.  Alabama-Bimingham (UAB)
UNC vs. UNC Charlotte
Tennessee vs. UT Chattanooga
Illinois vs. Illinois-Chicago (UIC)

I don't know how many of these teams play in the same divisions, but the
point is, the main campus is commonly known by the state name, whereas the
others have the location attached. The only reason I know these is because
that is how they are always identified on TV or in the paper.

If I hear someone say UMASS, my first thought is Amherst. I do know a lot
of people here in Boston whose first thought would be UMASS-Boston, not
Amherst or Lowell. Maybe it isn't right to the people at Lowell, but I
think over time, they will have to get used to seeing UMASS for Amherst. I
think the state wants that as much as the university, so they can build as
high profile a school as possible, and in turn, hopefully, benefit the whole
state system.

(who went to Albany State and will die if he ever hears someone call it SUNY
Albany).
