Bowling Green won the first game out of the three game series with the
Notre Dame Fighting Irish tonight by the score of 7-2. The Falcons
opened the scoring 6 minutes into the game on the power play when Kelly
Perrault scored on a one time blast from the point off of a feed from
Brandon Carper. The other assist on Perrault's 15th goal of the year
went to Curtis Fry.

Later in the period the BG fans received what they had being praying
for the past few weeks- Brian Holzinger breaking out of his slump. The
Falcons had broken out of their zone on a 3-2 and Holzinger took the pass
and skated into the Irish zone by himself and beat goalie Matt Eisler for
his 32nd tally of the season, ending the period at 2-0.

Perrault would score the only goal in the second stanza and his second
of the evening off a pass from Holzinger. Brian had brought the puck
into the zone drawing to Irish players to him, skated off to the side of
the net, turned and fed a perfect pass to Perrault in front of the net.

The final period saw 6 goals with 4 of those going in BG's favor.
Falcon defenseman Chad Ackerman tally one goal and three assists in the
3rd to continue his torrid play extending from last week. Mike Hall
would score his 14th goal of the year on a tip in off of an Ackerman
blast from the blue line before Notre Dame's Terry Lorenz would ruin BG
goalie Will Clarke's bid for a shutout. Lorenz scored his 12th goal of
the year on what I thought was an offsides play(it counted so that's that).

The Falcon fans would go into a frenzy when Holzinger scored his second
goal of the game and 100th goal of his career when he stuffed in a shot
after Eisler had stopped oh, the first six or so shots from right in
front of the net.

Notre Dame would score again as Steve Noble made the score 5-2. Noble
blasted the puck from a couple of feet inside the blueline after
defnseman Quinn Fair had tripped up. Ackerman would score on an
unassisted shot from the blueline for his 4th goal of the season I
believe putting the Falcons ahead by 4. Hall would score his second
goal of the game again tipping in an Ackerman shot to finish the
Falcon scoring.

It seemed to me that the Irish new that they weren't going to fair very
well against the Falcons and wanted to draw BG into doing something
stupid to get their minds off of winning and possibly getting players
thrown out of the game. A few minutes into the opening period an Irish
player took a run at Holzinger who was facing the boards and gave him a
vicious cross check sending him headfirst into the boards. I was
surprised that Zinger wasn't hurt on the play. The Irish player received
a 5 minute major for cross checking and BG's Quinn Fair received 2
minutes for roughing. This is what confuses me as Fair NEVER touched the
guy. As the Notre Dame player skated away from Holzinger, Fair went
after him to "voice his displeasure" but was intercepted by a linesman
who tackled Fair to the ice before he could get to the Irish player. Can
a player in any way be penalized for intent to do something(except intent
to injure)?

Then in the 3rd period Notre Dame's Brett Bruininks and BG's Jeff
Herman were jawing at eachother when Bruininks nailed Herman with a cross
check to the head. Both players went to the ice and wrestled around for
a little bit before getting separated. When the penalties were assesed,
each player received 4 minute roughing penalties and 10 minute
misconducts. I thought for sure Bruininks would receive an extra penalty
for the cross check but it didn't turn out that way. The only
explanation I have for it is that Shegos was tonight's referee(those who
follow the CCHA will understand the meaning behind that!). I just feel
that Notre Dame was taking runs at people all night trying to get BG
players tossed and Shegos just let everything go and I'm surprised that
there wasn't an all out brawl.

I don't see Notre Dame pulling off a win tomorrow night but I'm afraid
to see what the Irish try and do in tomorrow's contest. The only bright
spot for the Irish was the play of Eisler who had like 45 saves.

Alex's 3 stars:

1.Holzinger(BG)
2.Ackerman(BG)
3.Eisler(ND)

Play of the night- Notre Dame's Davide(Nachos) Dal Grande who stands
about 6-9 on skates and weighs 190 pounds was skating with the puck into
the Falcon's zone and was just flattened by Ackerman who is only 5-8 and
190 pounds. The term The bigger they are, the harder they fall was in
effect as Dal Grande hit the ice HARD!!!!!

To all you Maine fans out there- Former Black Bear Mike Latendresse
scored his 28th,29th,30th,and 31st goals of the season for the Toledo
Storm tonight. I think he's only played in 25 games or so.

Holzinger for Hobey Baker!!!!
