With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
upon us, it's time (actually well past time, sorry for the delay) to
announce the winners of the Pick the Post-Season Tournaments contests. For
Contest #1, in which the later rounds were weighted more than the earlier
ones, the overall winner is...
Ross Belfiori
In a close contest, his 219 points were one better than runner-up Bob
Fitta. Ross can now lay claim to being the luckiest -- I mean, most
skilled -- prognosticator here on HOCKEY-L. Let us all pause to marvel at
his amazing sheer DUMB LUCK -- excuse me, amazing abilities.
As for the individual conference winners...
Bob Fitta finished atop the ECAC with 60 points.
The CCHA race ended up in a tie between Ross Belfiori and Bob Fitta with 62
points each, with the first tiebreaker (final score of the championship
game) giving the title to Ross, who finished three points closer to the
actual score.
There was also a tie in the WCHA, between Dan Zeuske and Mike Larson with
48 points each. Dan won the first tiebreaker, predicting the final score
exactly.
The MAAC title went to Bob Fitta with 44 points.
From last week's update, Patrick Lethert won the Hockey East race with 35
points and Jennifer Iwen finished atop the CHA with 32 points, both in
tiebreakers.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and
thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The
first tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted
championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you picked the
score of the ECAC championship game (actually 3-2) to be 2-1, you would get
two points; if you picked 5-0, you would get four points; and if you picked
3-1, you would get one point. Obviously, the lower point score the
better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted
total of goals scored in the tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually
needed:
For Hockey East (from last week), the championship game score was 1-0.
For the CCHA, the championship game score was 5-3.
For the WCHA, the championship game score was 4-2.
For the CHA (from last week), the championship game score was 3-2.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win.
