HE Sat Feb 29:
BU 7, Merr 4
UNH 4, Low 0
Maine 4, PC 3
Standings: 1 Maine
2 UNH
3 PC
4 BU
5 BC
6 Low
7 NU
8 MC
One game remains, BC @ NU Sunday. Only one tie in the standings, PC & BU
for 3rd, but PC gets the edge. The first tiebreaker, head-to-head record,
was even at 1-1-1, but PC had 11 league wins and BU had only 10. So, we
have the following quarterfinal matchups (one game, single elimination):
Fri 3/6 #6 Lowell @ #3 PC 7 pm
Sat 3/7 #5 BC @ #4 BU 7 pm
Sun 3/8 #7 NU @ #2 UNH 2 pm
#8 MC @ #1 Maine 7 pm
All games will be shown live on NESN.
Astute observers or those with good memories may notice a change in the
tiebreakers. The 2nd tiebreaker used to be record against the first-place
team, then record against the 2nd-place team, etc. but this was dropped
further down the list. The reason is twofold: 1) since now teams play three
league games vs each opp, some teams may play different numbers of home
games against the 1st, etc. place team. EX: PC played 2 games at #1 Maine
while BU played only 1. And, 2) next year with the new 24-game schedule,
some teams will play 3 games vs some opp while others play 4.
Complete update to come Sunday night or Monday along with playoff preview.
FYI, here is Merrimack's planned NL schedule for 1992-93: open with 2 at
Western Michigan, return home for 2 vs Alabama-Huntsville, 2 at Air Force
over Thanksgiving, home vs Union on New Year's 2:00 pm, and at other times
host Vermont and RPI and travel to Dartmouth for single games (tot=10).
Sorry, Union fans. :-)
