The now "mythical" Taconite Trophy goes to St. Cloud this year (with or
without MSUMankato) for the best D1 program in Minnesota. It looks like
UMD was the whipping boy of it's instate rivals, only salvaging a tie at
the beginning of the season with Minnesota.
St. Cloud 7-1-2 (5-1-2 w/o MSUMankato)
UM 4-1-5 (4-1-3)
MSUM 0-2-2
UMD 0-7-1

History: Back when there was a chance that UMD might beat the Gophers once
in awhile there was a trophy that went to the series winner, basically for
bragging rights for the state. Rumor has it that one winter Jeff
Fieblekorn and Jesse Bergliot used it as a goal marker on a frozen
Minnesota lake. The trophy, won for so many seasons by Minnesota, was lost
through the ice. For those of you who don't know, taconite is a form of
iron mined in Northern Minnesota, and it resembles rabbit droppings, but
are not quite as tasty.
