Michigan State started out strong, having three goals called back in the first,
hitting posts and everything else, fell asleep in the middle, and had to
depend on the skills of a freshman to pull out a 6-4 win over UIC at Munn
Ice Arena tonight to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three first round CCHA
playoff series.

The Spartans were in danger of losing the first game of the series to UIC for
the second year in a row after squandering a 2-0 lead in the first and had to
battle back from a 4-3 deficit in the third. Freshman center Richard Keyes
tallied the game-tying goal on the power play and notched the game winner on
a beautiful wrist shot from the slot off of a feed from Tyler Harlton to beat
UIC goaltender Paul Spencer "where Grandma hides the peanut butter." MSU had
seemed listless in the third after Blum put UIC ahead with about 7 minutes
gone in the third, but managed to rally from behind. Freshman Sean Berens
continued his consecutive-game goal-scoring streak, increasing it to 6 with a
two-goal performance, including the empty netter to ice the game and get us
all free pizza (the people at Good Times must have been sitting listening to
the radio, yelling out, "Why the hell did they pull the goalie?"). Rem Murray
added a power-play goal and sophomore forward Brian Crane tallied his first
in a LOOOOOOOONG time for the Spartans.

Oh, before I forget, the three stars:
1. Keyes, MSU
2. MacDonald, UIC
3. Murray, MSU

The same two teams play tomorrow night at Munn. In other CCHA action, LSSU
led WMU 3-1 in the third, UM had a 6-1 lead on OSU, BG led ND 6-1, and Miami
was pasting FSU 8-2. So, unlike HE, the CCHA is at the moment holding to
form.

WVU '87, UTenn '92, MSU (you mean we gotta cheer for Michigan to beat Purdue
to get a share of the Baker's Ten title?) who the hell knows when?
