Thanks to Terry May, Northern Arizona, for sending me a copy of the ACHA's
(American Collegiate Hockey Association) June 1992 newsletter from which
this information came. This gives a great view of what ACHA hockey is to
those of us who are mainly familiar only with NC$$ hockey.
This is long, but I hope you'll take the time to read through it.
ACHA DIVISION I TOURNAMENT (1992)
Iowa State University won the inaugural ACHA Division I National
Tournament after finishing second three times in the tournament it
replaced, the National Invitational Tournament. The Iowa State Cyclones
defeated top seed University of Michigan-Dearborn 7-5 in the finals.
Penn State University bested North Dakota State 5-1 to finish third in
the final standings. The ranking committee's top four tournament seeds
survived the round robin portion of the tournament and entertained
capacity crowds at the Penn State Ice Pavilion in the consolation and
championship games. Tournament MVP was Anfu Wang, freshman forward from
Iowa State. The balance of the all-tournament first team was goalie Peter
Jarvis, Iowa State, defensemen Todd Keller (UMD) and Mike Messner (Penn
State) and forwards Kelly Walker (Arizona) and Mark Spease (UMD). Second
team selections were goalie Joe Aho (UMD), defensemen Greg Lund (NDSU)
and Brian Williams (Iowa State) and forwards Ross Cowan (Penn State), Rob
Hansen (NDSU) and Brandon Ransom (EMU).

ACHA DIVISION II TOURNAMENT (1992)
The University of Toledo stormed through the field to easily win the
Division II Champsionship hosted by DePaul University. The University of
Kentucky was the victim in the final game by a 10-3 margin. In the
consolation final DePaul edged the Iowa State Division II team 6-4. The
Division II field was well balanced, with the exception of Toledo. Each
of the other seven contenders earned at least one point in the round robin
portion of the tournament. With only one senior on the Toledo roster,
they should make a smooth transition into the Division I ranks next
season. The leading scorers in the tournament were Kirk Ludwig of Toledo
(7g 9a) and Chad Cooper of Kentucky (13g 1a).

NEWS (paraphrased from newsletter)
*Penn State, Delaware, Maryland, Rhode Island, and West Chester University
have formed the Atlantic Collegiate Hockey League (ACHL). The new league
will begin play in 1992-93.
*The ACHA now includes over 50 member schools; about 15% of eligible teams
have joined over the ACHA's first ten month period. The ACHA has also
developed a new logo and the ACHA's logo will be on display in rinks,
on uniforms and on print media.
*The ACHA is compiling an ACHA master schedule including all DivI and
DivII ACHA member teams.
*The 1993 ACHA Division I National Tournament will be hosted by North
Dakota State University from March 3-6, 1993.
The newsletter states that the ACHA has been contacted by two 1991-92
NC$$ programs which have a desire to switch from NC$$ status to ACHA
status for 1992-93. My guess would be that these two programs are
St John's (NY) and SUNY-Binghamton, as these two programs left the ECAC,
but I don't know for sure.
Kentucky, which ended the season ranked 2nd in the ACHA DivII, is
supposed to open the season at NC$$ DivI Alabama-Huntsville, according
to UAH's schedule. (UAH hosted South Florida, a team in Kentucky's
conference, last season and beat them 24-1 and 15-0.) But apparently
Kentucky is having rink problems and may not have a home rink for this
season.
By the way, Emerson College, listed in the Northeast Collegiate Hockey
Association DivII standings, is a team I actually coached for a game,
believe it or not. Don't remember whether I mentioned this before; it
happened back in 1986-87 while I was at Northeastern (I had friends who
played for the Emerson team). My career college coaching record stands
at 0-1, as Emerson, which iced only nine players including two goalies,
held a 3-0 lead with 8 minutes left but lost to Daniel Webster College,
5-3. Ah, well. :-)
