The Clarkson Golden Knights handed Plattsburgh State, the top-ranked team in
Division III, their first loss last night by a 6-2 score. Todd Marchant led
the way for the Knights with a hat trick. Clarkson had a 3-0 lead early in
the third period on goals by Scott Thomas, Marchant, and Brian Mueller, but
Plattsburgh cut the lead to one with a pair of goals 1:46 apart by John
O'Malley (an unassisted short-hander) and John Peron. However, Marchant
scored again at 5:30 of the third, and Thomas made it 5-2 about five minutes
later. Marchant completed his hat trick with a power-play goal with 14
seconds left. Chris Rogles made 27 saves.
On the records in the NCAA poll that Jim posted: I think the NCAA lists the
team records against Division I competition only, rather than the overall
records. The discrepancies in the records for Clarkson, St. Lawrence, and
Yale match their records against non-Division I teams (not sure about the
others in the poll).
