BOWLING GREEN'S BRIAN HOLZINGER NAMED PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR,
MARTY TURCO AND BUDDY POWERS ALSO RECOGNIZED

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association presented the Player-of-the-Year,
Rookie-of-the-Year, and Coach-of-the-Year Awards at its 11th Annual CCHA Awards
Banquet on Friday night.

    Player-of-the-Year Brian Holzinger Bowling Green

    Rookie-of-the-Year Marty Turco Michigan

    Coach-of-the-Year Buddy Powers Bowling Green

Bowling Green State University senior center Brian Holzinger (Parma, Ohio) has
been named the 1994-95 CCHA Player-of-the-Year. Holzinger becomes the first
Falcon since Brian Hills (1982-83) to receive this honor. He finished second
in the CCHA in league scoring with 44 points on 21 goals and 23 assists.
Included in his 21 league goals were five power play markers, two shorthanded
goals and a team-leading three game winners. Holzinger was selected in the
1991 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. He is also one of the 10 finalists
for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

Freshman goaltender Marty Turco (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario), from the
University of Michigan, has been selected as the 1994-95 CCHA Rookie-of-the-
Year. This is the fourth time in the last six years a Wolverine player has
been recognized as the CCHA Rookie-of-the-Year. Turco led all CCHA netminders
with 20 league wins, while posting an impressive 2.88 goals-against average.
He ranked third in both saves percentage (.891) and minutes played (1,397:47)
among all CCHA goalies. Turco's strong play and 14-game unbeaten streak (13-0-
1) helped Michigan repeat as league champion. He was drafted last summer by
the Dallas Stars.

First-year Bowling Green State University Head Coach Buddy Powers was the
selection of his coaching peers as the CCHA Coach-of-the-Year . This season,
Powers led the Falcons to their best CCHA regular-season finish (second place)
since the 1987-88 season (his last year as an assistant at BGSU). The Falcons'
league winning percentage of .704 was their best since the 1986-87 team
compiled a 24-6-2 record (.781). Bowling Green ranked second in the CCHA in
goals per game (5.00) and fifth in goals allowed per game (3.74).
