HEAL RPI
Average ranking of each league: Average ranking of each league:
WCHA: 18.10 WCHA: 18.80
HEA: 21.33 HEA: 19.22
CCHA: 24.91 CCHA: 24.00
ECAC: 21.33 ECAC: 23.17
IND: 43.50 IND: 43.50
Notes on this issue:
- For comparison purposes, I've added (unofficial) RPI to this week's
ranking.
- Teams selected by HEAL match exactly those of RPI, this year.
Positions of some teams vary.
Michigan State (#7 RPI) would "squeak" into the HEAL field at #11.
But this difference is deceiving. The RPI values for positions #7-#11
are *very* close. HEAL differs mostly in that Clarkson and Wisconsin
do noticably better than the rest of this group (w/HEAL).
Bowling Green (#12 RPI) and Northeastern (#13 RPI) would not be "under
consideration" with HEAL. RPI (#18 RPI), but winner of the ECAC
tourney, looks better with HEAL at #14.
- RPI uses a magic value of 0.0100; teams with RPI values different by
less than 0.0100 go to a tie-breaker procedure. I don't know what an
appropriate value for HEAL would be. I'm of the opinion that the
tie-breaker procedure is meddling, not fine-tuning, and so should not
be used.
On "The Heal Point System" ...
The Heal Point System is used to rank secondary schools in Maine in
several sports. The Heal Point System was developed many years ago by
Durwood Heal to rank Maine secondary school basketball teams.
On the Maine secondary school calculation ...
"P.I." stands for "Preliminary Index". "P.I." is calculated for each
team by giving a team 40 points for each win and 20 points for each tie,
and then dividing by the number of scheduled games. Minimum "P.I." is
1.00.
"T.I." stands for "Tournament Index" and is used to rank the teams.
"T.I." is calculated for each team by summing the "P.I." of the
opponents for each win, one half the "P.I." for each tie, then dividing
by the number of games scheduled and then multiplying by 10.
Note: This Division I college hockey "Heal Point System" ranking uses
the number of games played instead of the number of games scheduled.
Since all games in Division I college hockey are normally played,
there is no difference between this and the traditional Heal Point
System at end of season and this method produces better preliminary
results.
Game scores for this ranking have been provided by Mike Machnik and
HOCKEY-L, The College Hockey Discussion List, an internet mailing list
hosted by The University of Maine System. Mr. Machnik's composite of
all Division I men's ice hockey games is available in the HOCKEY-L
([log in to unmask]) archives as file "9495COMP SCHEDULE".
