After its loss to UNH, BU got back into its winning ways with three
wins: a hard-fought sweep of UMass-Lowell and a first-round Beanpot win
over BC. The Terriers are four points behind first-place Maine, but the
Black Bears have two games in hand.
Maine remained unbeaten by sweeping two games at UNH. The Black Bears
are five games away from tying the NC$$ record for unbeaten streak in a
season. Maine sets new HE records for unbeaten streak and consecutive
wins each game; currently the streaks are: unbeaten, 14 games (13-0-1)
and winning, 12 games. Providence swept Northeastern to move into a tie
with UML for 4th, and Merrimack & BC split a Wed-Fri series with each
team winning at home.
NEXT WEEKEND
Merrimack-BC and PC-NU will complete their season series with games
Friday. BU hosts UNH in the completion of their season set on Friday
in a game on NESN. UMass-Lowell, the last team to beat Maine at home,
will try for an upset this weekend as the Chiefs go up to Orono for a
pair. Saturday, the Beanpot teams and Providence are off and other than
the second UML-Maine game, the only other action will find Merrimack
hosting UNH in the third and final game of those two teams' season set.
Monday night, BU will battle ECAC leader Harvard for the bragging rights
to Boston in the Beanpot Championship. BU handed Harvard its only loss
of the season, 4-3 at BU back in late November. The consolation has BC
playing Northeastern; the two teams have played twice thus far, playing
to a 2-2 tie at NU while BC pulled out a 4-1 win at home. They will also
play in the season finale on March 5th.
OFF WEEKEND?
Paul Kariya was nearly held scoreless for the first time in his college
career Friday night in Maine's 5-2 win over UNH, but he tallied his 17th
goal with 9:41 left in the game. He added two more assists Saturday in
Maine's 8-3 win for 1-2--3 on the weekend - a pair of off nights for a
player averaging 3.00 pts per game coming in. Kariya now has 17-46--63
in 22 games for 2.86 pts per game. In HE, he has 10-32--42, four assists
away from tying the HE record for assists by a freshman and seven points
shy of the freshman point record.
Maine's top line of Kariya-Ingraham-Montgomery overall had an off night
on Friday, as Ingraham was kept off the board and Montgomery had one
assist. They rebounded the next night as Ingraham had four goals and
Montgomery contributed two assists, to go along with Kariya's two assists.
Here is how the line has performed thus far. The line occupies the top
three overall scoring spots in Hockey East. Ingraham moved ahead of
Montgomery into the 2nd spot behind Kariya with his 4 pts on the weekend
to Montgomery's 3.
PLAYER, CLASS/POS/SCHOOL GP G--A-PTS

Thanks to Wayne for posting the left wings, uh, players of the week. :-)
