This may be a tough one to answer. I don't know the history as far as
our school colors are concerned, but what does a team's nickname
really have to do with its uniform colors?
 
A black bear is a type of bear. We are the University of Maine Black
Bears. "Black" doesn't refer to anything but the type of bear our
mascot is.
 
Why don't teams dress in uniforms that are costumes of their nick-
names? You could ask why Maine doesn't dress up like bears and
Boston College players don't run around dressed as eagles...
