Nothing ticks off a sports fan more than a sports reporter with a motive!
First, the guy showed he has no grasp of college recruiting. This is sad
since he's THE high school sports reporter at the Eagle-Tribune. You'd
think he'd written a few pieces about "Johnnie's Recruitment Notebook".
Second, where's the Sports Editor? This column is, by nature, a fluff
piece. "Former local HS star Jen Smith is hitting .295 with 3 HR at Fred
State." A real editor would have spiked it.
Third, it comes as NO surprise. There's a Div I program in town and it is
rarely covered. Looking over at the Press Box at a Merrimack game is
pretty funny--Mike Machnik and the SID. The AMAZING thing is that the Sports
Editor is none other than Russ Conway. He's the guy who broke the Alan
Eagleson/NHLPA story. He's a big time hockey writer. I can't figure out
why he won't cover a Division I hockey program that's literally 100
yards away.
Cheers,
rand
