Since I have heard from a number of people with the same question:

I am not sure why Nan Gorton transferred from Bowdoin to Brown. I
have heard comments about academic and personal reasons for leaving
the frozen north. Bowdoin has a good team (read: Harvard watch out!).
However with the Polar Bears Gorton was THE STAR. It is hard to tell
how good a player is unless they are playing with others of excellent
skill. Last night I watched Gorton for five minutes with Brown and
thought, this kid is better than I remember. At Bowdoin I thought she
was good enough to make the national side, but I didn't know how good
a team player she would be. At Brown, I see a wonderful team player,
as well as an excellent attacker. I think when picking a national
team it is important to pick not the best 20 players, but 20 people
who can play together. Playing at Brown, Gorton (and others like
King, Solari, Woog, Kellar) have a grand stage to show their skills.
The move to Brown may have been strictly academic, but it certainly
is helping her national team standing. I would add, if she keeps
playing like she did last night, and finds a mate to play with,
she has the skill and drive to theoretically make Team Canada!!!
