    RE>PC-Maine Rivalry
When we talk about this rivalry, it's interesting to note that the teams
were evenly matched for only three seasons--'84-'85 through '86-'87,
Shawn Walsh's first three years at Maine. Providence dominated
before that, Maine since.

The series began during the '79-'80 season. PC won nine of the first
ten meetings between the two teams, including an 11-0 job on Feb.
6, 1982. Walsh arrived to start the '84-'85 season and the Maine
program began to improve, taking 7 of the next 13. 11 of those 13
games, which were played over the course of three seasons, were
decided by three goals or less.

Since then, the Black Bears have dominated the Friars, going 22-3-1
since the start of the '87-'88 season. Providence has not beaten
Maine (excluding forfeits) since Feb. 8, 1991 The Black Bears are
9-0-1 since that game. Maine is 15-1-1 in the last 17 games against
PC.

Overall: Maine 30, Providence 18, 1 tie; the next meeting between
the two teams (Nov. 18 in Orono) will be the 50th.

These figures do not reflect Maine's three forfeits to Providence from
last year. Maine's official record against PC is 27-21-1.

With mixed feelings,
