What started out as relatively listless turned into a nail-biter at
Houston Field House in Troy, NY on Saturday night.
RPI stole a win away from Union College by a score of 4-3. The game-winner
came with 38 seconds remaining by Jeff Matthews.
I say that RPI "stole" a win because Union outhustled, outshot, and basically
outplayed RPI for the majority of the game. Mike Gallant was solid (with a
couple of soft ones) for the Dutchmen. He turned the game around with a
breakaway save against Jeff Matthews (?) late in the second period. At that
point it was 2-0 in favor of RPI. After the period was over, the game was
tied 2-2. (I apologize for the lack of names. It WAS a tense game! :-) )
Union took the lead early in the third, but RPI came right back with the
tying goal. After a lot of back-and-forth, end-to-end action for most of
the third period, RPI put one past Gallant with :38 left.
A heart-breaking loss for the Dutchmen, who go to 1-3-1 in the ECAC. I
think coach Delventhal would have been pleased with Union's play tonight.
As I said earlier, they outplayed RPI. The Dutchmen did a good job of
clogging the neutral zone for most of the game, and a lot of play was in the
RPI defensive zone.
Next up for Union, at Princeton next Sunday.
