Overheard at the Cornell Hockey banquet: Apparently, former Big Red
defenseman Dave Burke, who graduated in 1992, played last year for a minor
league team in North Carolina, somewhere near Winston-Salem. (Greensboro,
maybe?) The guy who told me this recently went down to that area and
visited Dave, who related tales of "14-hour bus trips" to play teams in West
Virginia and Maryland, among other areas. Dave was hoping to latch on with
an NHL farm team ("the team in Newfoundland" was mentioned -- I assume that
means St. John's), but he didn't get the call this year. He's been working
with a carpentry firm, building kitchen cabinets, and says he will give it
one more shot with the North Carolina team next year.
