I don't know whether to be happy about this or not. I object
to events being on Pay Per View that could just as well be on cable or
broadcast TV (like NBC's suck-a-rama coverage of the 1992 Olympics,
which I suspected was to get people to buy the TripleCast). OTOH, if
it's something that wouldn't otherwise be available, I wouldn't feel
taken advantage of. Thirty bucks to see all of the regionals is a lot
better than tracking down a sports bar that gets M$C and then having a
game pre-empted by a pep rally (1997), but maybe not as good as having
half the games on eSPn2 (1995). As I recall, that year neither
Clarkson nor RPI advanced to what would have been a TV game.
This sounds like a much better deal for non-dish people,
actually. If one of the RSNs had picked it up, and the NCAA had
gotten its blackout procedures right, folks with mini-dishes could
have seen the regionals for free.
I suppose I'd be more excited if there were anyone in Salt
Lake who go in with me on it. If I'm shelling for the whole thing, I
suppose I'll feel obliged to watch all 24 hours. The four-game
marathon Saturday should be interesting...
