The Penn State Icers won their first two ICHL games this weekend,
defeating Buffalo 8-0 on Friday and Niagara 8-3 on Saturday. Both games
were away. Goals against Buffalo were scored by: Midge HItchinson (2),
Ross Cowan (2), Rich Filar, Chris Cervellero, Andy McLaughlin, and
John Ioia. John Gray and Mark O'Brien split the time in goal for a
total of 20 saves.
Goals against Niagara scored by: Ross Cowan (2), Marc Gresko, John Ioia,
Dave Murphy, Chris Cervellero (2) and Ben Bouma. John Gray tallied 37
saves. This was only the second time in ten years that the Icers managed
to beat the Knights at home. The Knights are the defending ICHL champions.
The Icers overall record is 5-1 and their ICHL record is now 2-0.
Wait...
There's more:
The Penn State Icers are not recognized by The Pennsylvania State University
as varsity sport so their official status is that of a club sport only. With
the coming addition of Penn State varsity sports to the "BIG TEN" {or better
eleven as our university president calls them -- what a weinerhead} the
future of ice hockey at Penn State is uncertain. I am not 100% sure of the
intentions of the club administration & coaching staff but I plan to find
out. From what I understand, until the club gets recognition and varsity
status from the university (read: money, and lots of it) they are not going
anywhere. Any guesses where they would wind up? I haven't a clue. For
this season however, we should dominate the ICHL (International Collegiate
Hockey League) since Niagara is our toughest competition in the league and
we managed them pretty well.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the Icers or
the ICHL. Icers info is easy but getting info other than rosters of
the other ICHL teams may be a little more involved.
