ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- One ghost down, one to go for
Boston University.
The Terriers exorcised their St. Paul demon Thursday
night, beating Minnesota 4-1 in the NCAA hockey semifinals.
They went up 3-0 after one period, just as they did in the
1991 title game here against Northern Michigan. This time,
they didn't blow it.
"It really hit me when we first showed up and I walked
down the ramp and saw the arena again," said senior captain
Doug Friedman, the only current BU player who played in the
triple-overtime loss to Northern Michigan three years ago.
"It reminded me of the last time. And it reminded me that
this time, we want to go all the way."
To do that, they'll have to get rid of Ghost No. 2.
Boston (32-7-1) meets Lake Superior State (30-10-4) in
Saturday night's championship game. Last year in the
semifinals, Lake Superior crushed the Terriers 6-1.
"We didn't take it to Lake Superior. They took it to
us," said Mike Pomichter, who scored twice against
Minnesota. "We're going to be fired up. We really want this
championship."
To get their fourth title, but first since 1978, the
Terriers might want to avoid overtime.
Lake Superior State earned a shot at its second title
in three years with Thursday's 3-2 OT victory over Harvard.
The Lakers have gone into overtime in each of their three
NCAA tournament games and have won them all, beating
Northeastern and Michigan before edging Harvard.
Lake Superior State had a chance to win near the end of
regulation after Harvard's Kirk Nielsen was assessed a
major penalty.
"I think we made an effort not to score in that
five-minute penalty so we could get into overtime," said
coach Jeff Jackson, whose Lakers will make their third
straight title-game appearance. "I think that our experience
of being in overtime all season helped us."
Said Clayton Beddoes, who scored the winner 4:16 into the
extra period: "We don't have a confidence problem. We always
seem to do well in overtime."
While 30 percent of Lake Superior State's games have gone
into OT this season, Boston has been in only one overtime
contest -- a scoreless tie with Maine.
J.P. McKersie played goal in that game for the Terriers.
He also played brilliantly in Thursday's game against
Minnesota, making 31 saves.
But he won't be in net Saturday when BU takes on Lake
Superior State.
Boston coach Jack Parker rotates goalies, and it's
Minneapolis native Derek Herlofsky's turn next.
Herlofsky was in goal for last year's semifinal loss
to Lake Superior. But he also was in goal for last
weekend's quarterfinal victory over Wisconsin and has
won 11 consecutive starts.
Reporters "see a guy like McKersie play so well and
say, 'Why would they not play him the next game?' The
reason is they didn't see the game before that when
Harlofsky played so well," Parker said. "It's a no-brainer
 -- thank God."
Thursday, Parker was thankful for McKersie.
The goalie did his best work in the second period,
when Minnesota took the first 11 shots -- and brought
back memories of BU's 1991 collapse against Northern
Michigan.
"Absolutely, that was the first thing I thought of,"
Parker said. "We lost our poise. We were getting a little
big jumpy. But that's why McKersie's there."
Lake Superior State also gets superb goaltending,
but the Lakers stick with one man: Blaine Lacher.
He made 26 saves against Harvard and leads the nation
in both goals-against average (2.02) and save percentage
(.917).
Thanks in great part to Lacher, Lake Superior State is
13-1-2 since a 2-4-2 January slump.
And back in the title game.
"I'll never get spoiled by this," said Jackson, who has
at least 30 wins in each of his four seasons as Lakers coach.
"My exterior is calm but my interior isn't."
