HOCKEY WINS AT WORCESTER STATE, 2-1
AUBURN, MA-Freshman forward Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, NJ/N.J. Rockets) scored the game-winning goal with 26 seconds remaining in the second period, and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team held off host Worcester State in the third period for a 2-1 victory in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Daniel Horgan Memorial Ice Rink Tuesday evening.
Capodanno finished off a three-on-one break, converting a pass from sophomore forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) and firing a shot past WSC goaltender Andrew Evams to break a 1-1 tie at 19:34 of the second period. Junior defenseman Chris Carpenter (Westford, MA/Berkshire School) also assisted on the play.
Senior forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) had given the Corsairs a 1-0 lead when he scored the only goal of the first period. He raced down the ice and scored at 8:21 of the first period after UMass Dartmouth won a face-off in their own zone. Senior forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) and junior forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) drew the assists. The Lancers tied it 37 seconds into the second period, when Cody Warila converted passes from Mark Rintel and Nick Asterito and beat UMD senior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors).
“It was good to get out of there with a win, we had periods where we carried the play, and periods where we didn’t,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “They played very well, they outplayed us for most of the second period. We killed all six of their power plays, and our only power play came at the very end of the game when we were in a defensive setup.”
The Corsairs out shot the Lancers, 43-25. Green made 24 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Evans made 41 saves for Worcester State. UMass Dartmouth didn’t convert their only power play chance, but they killed all six WSC opportunities.
The Corsairs improved to 8-4-1 and 6-1-0 in the ECAC Northeast with the victory, while the Lancers dropped to 3-9-0 and 1-5-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Lebanon Valley College in a non-conference game Friday night, and Westfield State in an ECAC Northeast game Saturday. “We have a very big weekend coming up,” said Rolli.
