A valiant effort by the Union Dutchmen Saturday night just wasn't enough.
Cornell's Mike Knoepfli scored the game-winner at 14:39 of the third period
and Matt McRae scored an empty-netter to ice a 3-1 victory Saturday night
at Lynah Rink.
Union's defense was stellar, despite the 30 official shots on goal. Several
others were either blocked or missed the net. Tim Roth got his first start
since
Union was dominated by Cornell on January 17th and made 27 saves. Union
held a 1-0 lead after one period and were tied 1-1 after two.
Cornell finishes its regular season 13-0 at home and is one point away from
clinching their second consecutive ECAC Regular Season championship.
Even with the loss, the Dutchmen have clinched their first ever Division I
playoff series at home. With Harvard's victory over Vermont, that leaves
Union 4 points ahead of St. Lawrence and Vermont in the ECAC standings.
Union swept the season series with St. Lawrence and owns the tiebreaker
win over Vermont (record vs top 7 - even if Vermont sweeps Union and RPI
next weekend).
Congratulations to the Union players and coach Kevin Sneddon!
