Kevin Hampe did an outstanding job with the Harvard JV program. He
always had his players flying around the rink in the previous brilliant
Harvard fashion. His players were ready to step-up and play for the
varsity when needed. Cleary, Tomassoni and Hempe guided Harvard to their
national title in 1989. Hempe will be greatly missed.

Crimson Names Former Terrier Standout Mark Bavis Assistant Coach
CAMBRIDGE, MA--Harvard University men's ice hockey head coach Ronn
Tomassoni has announced the hiring of former Boston University forward
Mark Bavis as an assistant coach.
Bavis will become involved in all facets of the program as an
assistant with the varsity and head coach of the junior varsity, as
well as aid in the recruiting effort. He joins a staff that includes
Tomassoni, assistant Jerry Pawloski '88, and volunteer assistant
Chuckie Hughes '92. Bavis replaces Kevin Hampe '73, who resigned after
21 years in order to spend more time with his family.
"Mark comes highly recommended by a lot of people," said Tomassoni.
"He's got a tremendous background, and he's a very hard worker."
A native of Roslindale, Bavis is a 1988 graduate of Catholic Memorial,
where he teamed with his classmate Hughes on three consecutive state
champions from 1986-88. During his senior year, he was a Boston Globe
and Boston Herald All-Scholastic. After a postgraduate year at Cushing
Academy, where he was a New England Prep all-star, Bavis embarked on a
successful career at Boston University.
In four seasons from 1989-93, Bavis tallied 34 goals and 51 assists
for 85 points and twice received the Bennett McInnis Award for Team
Spirit, sharing the honor each time with his twin brother, Mike.
Bavis' career coincided with BU's most recent rise as a national
power. The Terriers advanced to the NCAA Tournament all four years,
reached the semifinals on three occasions, and played in the 1991 NCAA
Championship Game. The squad also won three Beanpots and one Hockey
East Championship.
A ninth-round draft pick of the New York Rangers (1989), Bavis played
three years in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey
League. Last year he served as a volunteer assistant at Brown. Bavis
also has been extensively involved in the Massachusetts USA Hockey
Satellite Program, working as a coach for five years before being
named program director this year. The program works with players aged
13 to 17 and selects participants for USA Hockey tournaments.
"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to be coaching at one of the
best institutions for academics and hockey in this country," said
Bavis, who is single and currently resides in Framingham.
