I was talking about the modern era of Flames hockey. In 1980 the
University of Illinois Board of Trustees made the decision to award a
Division I hockey team to its Chicago campus - because here in Champaign we
already had two high profile men's teams (football and basketball). At
the same time they awarded our campus with a Division I women's
volleyball team. It just as easily could have gone the other way, since
we already had an established club team in Champaign (as did UIC). But
because, like I mentioned, men's football and basketball were so popular
here they wanted to create a high exposure men's team at the Chicago
campus. So, yes UIC had hockey before 1980. But what I was referring to
happened in 1980.
