The Wisconsin athletic department said yesterday that an internal investigation
had reported two "secondary" NCAA rules violations involving the hockey team.
Quoting from the Wisconsin State Journal article:
... former UW hockey players Duane Derksen and Doug Macdonald lived
with a UW hockey booster last season but the two did not pay the
booster what is considered market value for room and board.
... the report indicates that UW hockey Coach Jeff Sauer advised
[Associate Athletic Director Joel] Maturi of the situation during
the season. Maturi, who is the administrator in charge of hockey
and was then the department's compliance officer, advised [Athletic
Director Pat] Richter of the possible problem.
The situation was not resolved until Turkheimer discovered it in
July while he was conducting an investigation into violations in
the football program. "There was an understanding that it had been
resolved and taken care of," [Athletic Board chairman] Hoyt said.
"It turned out that was not the case."
The players, who both recently signed professional contracts have
been asked to repay the money thney made through the living
arrangement with the booster. Hoyt would not say what the amount
was, but did say it was less than the $3500 in scholarship money
the hockey team will lose.
It has been previously reported that Coach Sauer has "discouraged"
players from living with local families since he became head coach. The
article said that Richter and Maturi received letters of reprimand for
their handling of the situation. Basically, Sauer reported a potential
problem, and they didn't follow up.
Since then, the department has hired a full-time compliance officer.
(By the way, the violations in the football program are also minor.
They will lose four practice days next season).
