Have you had trouble finding your favorite Division 1 college hockey
coach this week? Don't worry, they are safe and sound in St. Cloud,
Minnesota at the 1998 USA Hockey Select 17 Festival -- and at all the
local restaurants, golf courses, etc.
New York, behind the stellar goaltending of Shawn Conschafter and Chris
Gartman, won the Gold medal game in overtime 3-2, beating previously
undefeated Minnkota. In the round-robin phase of the tournament,
Minnkota won the American division with New York coming in second, the
difference being an opening day win by Minnkota over New York 6-2. The
National Division was won by New England with Michigan coming in second.
In the cross-over round or semifinals, Minnkota beat Michigan 5-2 and
New York beat the previously undefeated New England team 3-1 with two
goals in the final five minutes of the game.
Michigan prevailed over New England in the Bronze medal game. The Gold
medal game was a close, even affair. New York survived the first minute
and a half of overtime down two men (holding and too many men on the
ice) plus numerous, close-in Minnkota scoring chances before scoring the
winning goal.
