This afternoon, the Penn State Icers played their final home game of the
season as they faced the Rhode Island Rams in the Atlantic Collegiate Hockey
League Championship. Both teams came out hitting, and I do mean hitting, as
a near-brawl erupted during the pre-game skate, and both teams were assigned
a minor for roughing at 0:00 of the first. This did nothing for Rhode Island,
as it only made Penn State angry (and you wouldn't like us when we're angry).
The Icers went into an immediate feeding frenzy, much to the dismay of Ram
goaltender Garrett Boddington. By the 14:00 mark of the first, the Icers had
jumped out to a 7-0 lead, and that's the way the first period would end.
URI switched to goaltender Ed Ducharme at the beginning of the second.
Ducharme played fairly well in the second, holding the Icers to just 3 goals,
as Penn State took a 10-0 lead into the second intermission. But the Icers
certainly weren't finished yet. Penn State scored three times in the third
to make it 13-0, the last coming on Andy Strasser's hat trick. This resulted
in the obligatory hat salute (onto the ice, that is), and Penn State was
assessed a 2-minute minor for delay of game. Now, this was interesting as
even though they ask us not to throw things on to the ice, this was the first
time this season that they had actually given us a penalty for it. At any
rate, the Rams managed to score their only goal of the evening on the
ensuing power play (at which point the crowd pointed to themselves and chanted
"It's all our fault, it's all our fault...". But still the Icers were not
finished, and kept up the intensity right until the end of the game, and when
the dust (and hats) had cleared, Penn State had slaughtered Rhode Island 17-1
to win the first annual ACHL Tournament. Icer senior forwards Dave Murphy and
Ross Cowan were named co-MVPs of the tournament.

With the win, the Icers move to 30-0-0, the first ever 30-win season for the
Penn State Icers. They will leave for Fargo, ND on Monday for the American
Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament, beginning Wednesday at
North Dakota State. The Icers are currently outscoring their opponents
280-67 on the season...their 280 goals has shattered the previous team record
for goals in one season (258 in 40 games in 1983-84)...Senior Ross Cowan
broke the single-season record for goals, assist, and points this season this
past weekend.
