Average ranking of each league:

   WCHA: 17.50
    HEA: 21.67
   CCHA: 24.55
   ECAC: 21.92
    IND: 43.50

Notes for this HEAL issue:

   - The top-10 positions are unchanged this week, except that UNH and
Clarkson exchange #5 and #7 for the 2nd week in a row.

   - Brown jumps into #11 (from #16) with W#10 and W#36.

   - Bowling Green falls from #11 (to #14) with L#1 and T#28.

   - Harvard falls to #19 (from #15) with L#36 and L#10.

   - Note that a loss is a loss with HEAL. It doesn't matter whether
you lose to #1 or #44. On the other hand, either is a lost
     opportunity.

   - We are beginning to see what looks like some significant
differences between HEAL and RPI. The biggest difference is the
ranking of Northeastern. RPI has the 0.500 team ranked #8, whereas
     HEAL has them at #15.

On "The Heal Point System" ...

The Heal Point System is used to rank secondary schools in Maine in
several sports. The Heal Point System was developed many years ago by
Durwood Heal to rank Maine secondary school basketball teams.

On the Maine secondary school calculation ...

"P.I." stands for "Preliminary Index". "P.I." is calculated for each
team by giving a team 40 points for each win and 20 points for each tie,
and then dividing by the number of scheduled games. Minimum "P.I." is
1.00.

"T.I." stands for "Tournament Index" and is used to rank the teams.
"T.I." is calculated for each team by summing the "P.I." of the
opponents for each win, one half the "P.I." for each tie, then dividing
by the number of games scheduled and then multiplying by 10.

Note: This Division I college hockey "Heal Point System" ranking uses
the number of games played instead of the number of games scheduled.
Since all games in Division I college hockey are normally played,
there is no difference between this and the traditional Heal Point
System at end of season and this method produces better preliminary
   results.

Game scores for this ranking have been provided by Mike Machnik and
HOCKEY-L, The College Hockey Discussion List, an internet mailing list
hosted by The University of Maine System. Mr. Machnik's composite of
all Division I men's ice hockey games is available in the HOCKEY-L
([log in to unmask]) archives as file "9495COMP SCHEDULE".
