The year was 1992. Previous to that the ECAC had the "worst of all possible
worlds" 2 games plus minigame QF series. In '92 they instituted a single
game quarterfinal. RPI, a #10 seed who had upset #7 Vermont in the
preliminary round game the previous Tuesday, took out #1 Harvard in the QF.
(2 of the 4 QF series were upsets: #5 Cornell also won at #4 Yale.)
The very next year, the ECAC went to the "best of three / no o.t. in first
two games" series that we know and love today.
