Subject: ESPN 2 - "The Deuce"
Date: 8 Jun 93 16:56:20 GMT

Details on ESPN 2 launch were finally unveiled at a press conference
yesterday(Monday). Here's what is known :

* ESPN 2 will start satellite transmision on Tuesday,November 2(Election Day)
at precisely 2:22pm EDT. It's been dubbed the "Deuce".

* Three nights of NHL games are scheduled for Tuesday,Wednsday and Thursday.
("National Hockey Night/Game of The Week" will also remain on original
ESPN;probably on Fridays or Saturdays). ESPN 2 will show early round
playoffs that fall on Tuesdays,Wednesdays and Thursdays. *ALL* and I
repeat *ALL* conference finals and league final stay on ESPN.

* NO BASEBALL will be shown on ESPN 2.

* Rest of ESPN 2 sports prorgamming will include but will not be limitted to :

 - college basketball(NCAA)
 - volleyball(NCAA and pro)
 - auto racing(NASCAR)
 - Arena football
 - skiing
 - snowboarding
 - skysurfing
 - expanded draft coverage of NFL and other sports
 - sports oriented talk/game shows

On Friday,Saturdays,Sundays and Mondays, ESPN 2 will have "SportsNight"
from 8-11. It will be an upbeat sports news and features show with
a fast-paced "SportSmash" scores and updates on the half hour.

A nightly live fan call-in show called "SportsCall" based in Los Angeles
will be seen from 11 to midnight. Host to be named later.

"Jock and Rock" will be a late night program with box scores, game summaries
and standings with contemprorary hit music as a backdrop.

* ESPN 2 will be on basic service but as of now none of the Top 100
cable system operators signed up. Reason behind such cool reception :
  The service doesn't exist yet.

* ESPN 2 will be launced with about 2 million subscribers. ESPN has
61 million. 14 years ago when ESPN was launched it had less than 2
million. Times are different now. With a glut of sports on ESPN,
TNT,TBS,regional networks such as NESN,Prime-SCA,MSG and local
stations in a touhgh advertising climate, ESPN 2 will have a high
  hill to climb...

* ESPN 2 will be geared toward 18-34 males while ESPN is slowly moving
in a direction of somewhat broader 25-54 crowd.

* ESPN 2/ABC also announced that they will bid for 1996 Atlanta Summer
games where ESPN 2 would gain a major role during day coverage and
  ABC covering nights and weekends...

End of quoted material.

I still think this is as good a spot as any to start petitioning
(pleading? :-) ) for college hockey coverage. I assume the address
for ESPN that was posted awhile ago would be the best place to send
letters. I've just got to go dig it up at home....
