UMass-Lowell upped their record to 2-0-1 in Hockey East, 5-0-1 overall
with a 7-1 win over Providence College before a sparse crowd at Schneider
Arena. The Friars dropped to 0-6-0 in Hockey East, 2-6-0 overall. This is
the Friars' worst start since 1988-89.
Providence appeared to draw first blood at 6:50 of the first period.
Referee Bob Fowkes disallowed the goal, however, (correctly) ruling that the
net had dislodged before the puck crossed the line.
The Friars got on the board for real at 7:11 when Chad Quenneville slid a
low shot past Dwayne Roloson. Brady Kramer picked up the assist on a nice
feed that sent Quenneville in alone. The goal was Chad's second of the
season and the 33rd of his career..
Quenneville attempted to return the favor at the 9:40 mark when he sent
Brady Kramer in on a break-away. Roloson, outstanding in net all night for
the Chiefs, ended the bid with a stick save, sending the puck into the right-
hand corner.
The first period was one of Providence's best efforts of the season. The
Friars skated off with a 1-0 lead after 1, thanks in part to a slow start by
Lowell. It would be the last Friar lead of the evening.
Jeff Daw tied the game at 1 off a beautiful feed from Norm Bazin. The
sophomore from Carlisle, Ontario picked up his first goal of the season on the
first of 4 Chief power-play goals.
Ian Hebert scored his 4th goal of the season on a shorthanded bid off a
Norm Bazin rebound. Bazin skated in alone and fired off a wrist shot that
Friar goalie Bob Bell knocked to his left. Hebert fired the rebound into a
wide-open net.
Nick Donovan ended Lowell's second period scoring at the 14:11 mark. Bell
made the initial save off a point shot from Aaron Kriss. Donovan took the
rebound with two Friar defensemen all over him and finnessed the puck into the
lefthand corner. Donovan's was one of the prettiest goals I've seen and
definitely makes my "all-time highlite film."
The second period ended with the Chiefs up 3-1. Following a slow first
period, Lowell pelted 22 shots in on Bob Bell and notched three goals.
The first half of the third period was fairly close with neither team having
much of an advantage. Lowell broke the game open at 12:53 when Aaron Kriss put
a slapshot from the point into the upper left-hand corner behind Bell. The
goal was Kriss' first point of the season.
The game turned ugly late in the period as frustration set in. The Friars
took a number of foolish penalties in the closing minutes, including a 5 minute
major for slashing on Bob Bell at 17:44. Lowell took advantage of the
penalties and notched 3 more power-play goals: Mike Murray got his 2nd of the
year at 17:44, Ryan Sandholm his first at 18:33, and David Mayes closed it out
with his first goal at 19:34.
