Just a quick note on Smith -- prior to becoming an assistant with the Pen-
guins, he was the first head coach of Elmira College's varsity hockey team.
During his six seasons at Elmira (1975-81), he ran up a record of 129-50-3
(0.719 winning percentage) and guided the Soaring Eagles to five straight
20-win seasons, including their first ECAC West championship and their first
two NC$$ playoff appearances.
