Cornell defeated Colgate 4-1 last night at Lynah Rink. The
Big Red continued to look tough defensively (especially in front of their
own net), and Parris Duffus looked solid in goal once again (except for a shot
from center ice early in the game that clanged off the goal post to his
left).

An interesting thing occurred during the game that I thought
might be of interest to list readers. Cornell was leading 1-0 late in
the second period, and during the last few seconds of play defenseman
David Burke barely managed to keep the puck in at the Colgate blue line;
He subsequently laid it off to defense partner Todd Chambers who skated
in a few feet from the right point and fed Ryan Hughes in the slot who
slipped a nice cross-ice pass to left winger Jason Vogel who had empty
net staring him in the face ... and Cornell had what was probably their
prettiest goal of the season.

Or did they? The clock read 0:00. The period-ending buzzer had
*not* sounded. As it happens, the timekeeper's clock keeps track of tenths of
seconds even though the scoreboard clock doesn't. The buzzer is hooked
to the timekeeper's clock and goes off automatically when the clock reaches
zero. In this case, the fact that the buzzer hadn't sounded indicated
that the timekeeper had reacted to Cornell's scoring *before* the period
was over, which means (if you believe in a causal universe) that
Cornell had indeed scored before time expired.
