Thursday night at Colgate's Starr Rink, the Big Red overcame some shaky play

Notes:

Once again, a number of crucial defensive breakdowns killed Cornell, as an
opportunistic Colgate team was able to take advantage of some Big Red mis-
takes, especially in the third period. In the early going, however, Cornell
was looking fairly good at moving the puck out of their own end. Midway
through the period, Brad Chartrand cut off an errant Colgate pass and raced
up the ice on a potential breakaway before being hauled to the ice by
defenseman Rod Pamenter, who was called for hooking. Cornell could not do
much with the ensuing power play, though.

During their first man-up chance earlier in the period, the Red Raiders had
tried to clog things up in front of the Cornell net in an attempt to set up
the screen. They did the same thing on their second power play, which
started at 13:51 after Steve Wilson nailed Bill Baaki with a high stick, and
this time it worked -- sort of. With a number of players in front of the
Cornell net, Brad Dexter one-timed a bullet from the top of the slot that
winger Rob Mara got his stick on. Goaltender Jason Elliott made the save
but lost the puck in the crease, turned to find it, and accidentally knocked
it across the goal line. Mara got credit for the goal at the 14:05 mark.

A minute and a half later, it was 2-0. The Cornell defense was able to
break up a rush into the zone by Greg Lewis, poke-checking the puck away
from him, but linemate Steve DuBarry pounced on the loose puck in the left
circle and fired a shot into the net over Elliott's shoulder. Play began to
get chippy, and after a high-sticking call on P.C. Drouin, Geoff Lopatka
butt-ended Colgate's Earl Cronan in the chin right in front of referee
Pierre Belanger, who, astonishingly enough, let it go. More hostilities
occurred at the 19:00 mark, as Bill Holowatiuk tangled with Cronan and Matt
Cooney took on Mara. All were sent off for roughing; however, Mara went to
the locker room for X-rays (it was feared that he had suffered a broken
rib). Mara would miss the second period; however, the X-rays were negative,
and he came back for the third.

The Big Red played much better defensively in the middle period and as a
result were able to generate consistent pressure in the Colgate end. The
Red Raiders were having some defensive troubles of their own, but goalie Dan
Brenzavich was outstanding between the pipes, stopping 11 of 12 shots. Cor-
nell's only goal came at the 5:36 mark, off a 2-on-1 break by Chartrand and
Cooney.  Cooney fired from the blue line, and Chartrand deflected the shot;
Brenzavich got a piece of it, but the puck fluttered through his pads.

Colgate's Jack McIntosh squared off with Cooney midway through the period
and got his stick under Cooney's chin, earning himself a slashing minor, but
the Red Raiders would have their biggest opportunity of the period moments
later. Mike Harder, who led the nation in short-handed goals last year
(with six, I think), retrieved the puck from the right corner near the Cor-
nell net, eluded four (!) Big Red skaters, and fired toward Elliott, who
made a great stop. Had Harder been able to lift the puck more, he might
have had a goal, but Starr Rink (like the weather outside) was unusually
warm, and the ice was a bit slushy.

According to Brenzavich, Colgate coach Don Vaughan "really gave it to us"
during the second intermission, and whatever he said must have struck a
nerve, because Colgate came out and blew the Big Red off the ice in the
third. It started just 36 seconds in, when Cronan skated to the left circle
to receive a cross-ice feed from Chris DeProfio. Elliott came out to cut
down the angle, but Cronan slapped a high shot that sailed over the goal-
tender's left shoulder and caught the corner of the net. The Big Red barely
had time to recover from that when DeProfio won a faceoff in the Cornell
end, drawing the puck back to Pamenter at the point. Pamenter skated un-
molested through a scrambling Cornell defense and wristed a hard shot from
the slot that went in off the right goalpost at the 1:18 mark.

Cornell called their timeout, and Eddy Skazyk replaced Elliott in the net; a
clearly frustrated Elliott slammed his helmet off the back of the team bench
as he left the game. Colgate's Mara left the game again a few minutes later
(why he came back on the ice after apparently suffering an injury severe
enough to require X-rays is a mystery to me), but it didn't matter to the
Red Raiders. Another defensive miscue resulted in Colgate's fifth goal, at
the 5:06 mark, when Dru Burgess eluded defenseman Jason Kendall, skated to
the right side of the net, and popped home Dave Debusschere's feed through
the crease. Then DeProfio skated through the Cornell defense, came out from
behind the net, and stuffed the puck past Skazyk at 6:21 of the third. That
would be all for Skazyk, as Elliott returned to the Cornell net.

With the win pretty much assured, Colgate began to step up their physical
play. Cornell's defensive woes continued, and the Red Raiders got another
goal with six minutes left. Once again, the Red Raiders had put everybody
they could spare in front of the Cornell net, and during a scramble, the
puck came out to the right point, where Dexter rifled it home. After this,
Belanger and Harry Ammian, who had been letting things go up until that
point, called four penalties in a row on Colgate, and the Big Red was able
to get a couple of power-play goals to close out the scoring. During a
5-on-3, Drouin wristed a shot toward Brenzavich, who turned it aside, but
Mike Sancimino was there to tap the rebound in at the 16:11 mark. Then at
18:01, Jake Karam tipped a McManus feed through Brenzavich's pads. Another
Colgate penalty would have let the Big Red finish the game on the power
play, but Steve Wilson negated that one when he hauled off and belted a Red
Raider right in the jaw.

Brenzavich stopped 22 shots on the night, while Elliott had 28 saves and
Skazyk had two. The teams will play the rematch Saturday night at Lynah.
