Colorado College played what has to be its worst game so far this season, losing
to Wisconsin 8-1 tonight. The only highlight for CC fans came when Gudmundson
scored within the final minute to ruin Daubenspeck's shutout. Wisconsin was
really on their game tonight, and Daubenspeck was excellent in goal the few
times CC was actually able to take some shots on goal.
In the first, Mike Strobel opened up the scoring for Wisconsin. Chris Tok
added another to finish the period up 2-0. In the second, Carter had two
goals, the second of which was a tap-in of Elick's shot, Haley had a goal,
Mark Strobel got one, and so did Raygor. In the third Raygor got another one
to finish out the scoring for Wisconsin. After the fifth goal, Lambert was
replaced by Bach for the rest of the second period, the first time that's
happened this season. Lambert came back in the third to finish the game,
though. The Tigers kept taking a lot of dumb penalties, including a few
majors in the second, and ended up giving the Badgers 5 power play goals.
Colin Schmidt and Kent Fearns, who received the majors, sat out the rest of
the game, as Lucia didn't approve of their actions.
I was able to watch the game with some other students in the student center,
and the Deuce's coverage was horrible. They weren't always following the play
(or at least the person selecting which cameras wasn't), they were showing
dumb close-ups, as mentioned previously by Marcus Day, and the announcers
were really bad with pronunciation. We were laughing so hard at some of
their versions, the worst being with Geronazzo's name, when they once called
him Geronimo. They also at the beginning of the game talked about our backup
goaltender "John" Bach, and constantly mispronounced Lucia. What we probably
should have done was gotten a radio in there, turned off the sound on the tv,
and listened to the radio broadcast instead. The announcers also called Jason
Gudmundson's goal a fluke goal and said that CC didn't deserve to get it. It
did come in at kind of a weird angle, but he had a defenseman on him the whole
time he was trying to shoot.
CC still maintains the lead in the WCHA, but by how many points depends on
what happens elsewhere in the league. Next up is another tough road trip for
the Tigers, this time to Minneapolis to face the Gophers in their home of
Mariucci Arena.
