Michigan blew out Minnesota tonight with a score of 6-0 in the first
game of the CCHA/WCHA Hockey Showcase at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
Steve Shields earned the shut-out, but more note-worthy, became the
winninest goaltender in NCAA history with a 89-19-8 record. (Gary Kruzich
previously held the record while playing for Bowling Green from 1984-87.)
Michigan unleashed their secret weapon, David Oliver, in the first period
and never looked back. Oliver scored three goals in a row all in the 1st
period for the natural hatrick!
Next up: Wisconsin. Should be a good matchup. Last season, Michigan came
from behind to beat Wisconsin 4-3 in overtime to advance to the NCAA
semifinals. I remember this game fondly... It was at Joe Louis arena,
and I was stuck in the middle of a sea of red...I never gave up on my
Wolverines even when they were struggling. Even had a Badger fan try to
shut me up by smacking me with his hat...I guess he didn't like the
"cheesecake" comment;)
