With the first week of conference tournament play over, the current overall
leader in the Pick the Post-season Tournaments Contest #1 (which scores the
later-round games heavier than the first-round ones) is Andrew Weise, with 113
points.
Since the College Hockey America tournament was completed last weekend, we also
have the winner for that conference, and in a wild finish, the champ is
Christine Quinn. Twelve people picked all the games correctly and got the
maximum 40 points. The first tiebreaker (championship game score) whittled the
field down to Christine and Craig Roberts, and the second tiebreaker (total
goals in the tournament) gave the title to Christine by a point.
Scoring reminder: Three points were awarded for each correctly predicted
winner in a conference's first round/quarterfinal. An additional bonus point
was given for correctly forecasting the number of games (2 or 3) a series would
go. The bonus point did not apply to the MAAC, in which each quarterfinal was
a single game, or to the CHA, which had no quarterfinal round.
Scoring for the rest of the contest is as follows: 4 points for correctly
picking the winnner of each play-in/5 vs. 4 game (does not apply to Hockey East
and the MAAC), 8 points for correctly picking semifinal winners, 4 points for
picking the consolation winner (ECAC, WCHA, and CHA only), and 16 points for
picking the championship game winner.
Here is the scoring so far, overall and for each conference. The numbers in
parentheses indicate the highest possible total that person can get, given
his/her remaining predictions. Also included are the scores for the predictions
by the USCHO staff and a "Higher Seed" entry, showing what would have happened
if the higher seed for each game had been picked to win. Thus, in the "Higher
Seed" entry, all first-round/quarterfinal series get picked as sweeps.

Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you picked
the score of the CHA championship game (actually 3-2) to be 4-3, you would get
two points; if you picked 5-0, you would get four points; and if you picked
3-1, you would get one point. Obviously, the lower point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of goals
scored in the tournament and the actual number (43). Again, the lower the
point total the better.

"Anyway, after I've made my James Joyce faux pas, he invariably gives me an
indulgent chuckle: 'Heh-heh-heh-heh, ohhh my -- James Joyce didn't write
_Trees_. _Trees_ was written by Joyce Kilmer.' Of course, then I ask 'who
is SHE?' and I destroy myself completely."
