Curiously enough, this feature immediately makes Michigan State the favorite
to win the national championship, because over the past several years, the
famed Sports Illustrated jinx has worked in reverse for college hockey. In
January 1989, SI ran a feature on Harvard, which went on to win the cham-
pionship a few months later. In January (February?) 1991, three Northern
Michigan players were featured in Faces in the Crowd, and the Wildcats went
on to win the championship. In early 1993, SI did an article on Maine's
Paul Kariya (and I think they also featured Cal Ingraham in Faces in the
Crowd sometime during the season), and we know what the Black Bears did
that year. And in 1994, who did SI do a feature on? Why, Lake Superior's
Blaine Lacher, of course.

So, congrats in advance to the Spartans, unless of course SI notices some
other college team between now and the championship game...
