I have received a couple of replies to my posting and would like to
clarify something.
There is no inference in my posting disputing the admissions process
in the Ivies. I didn't say that there is cheating going on regarding the
admissions process. I know that the Ivies hold to their admission standards
regardless of whether you are a student athlete or not. There's a formula
that is used and if you don't come up to a certain number then you are rejected.
However, I know that a coach can apply for a waiver, from the admissions
department, and they in some cases allow it and in others reject it.
I'm saying that all things being equal and students (A) and (B) have
the qualifications for admission, that the financial aid package awarded to
student (B) can in some cases be larger because the school is recruiting that
athlete. I said that I find that hard to believe. It's only my opinion and I'm
suggesting a way to elimnate all the maneuvering that proposition 31 is going
to cause on all Division 1 schools.
