This weekend's scores:

Women:

Sunday: Queen's 5 Cornell 3

Men:

Friday: Cornell 4 Dartmouth 3 (ot)
Saturday: Cornell 1 Vermont 1 (ot)

--------------------------

Women:

I have no details other than the score. I'm not even sure what
"Queen's" is, though I suspect it's the Canadian Queen's College.

The women open their ECAC season next weekend, hosting
Brown Saturday at 2 and powerhouse Providence Sunday at 2.
And I want to see people there this year!

Men:

I'm not easily excited, but I'm psyched about this team. They
played fabulous hockey through 6 of the 8 periods, with only slight
let-downs in each first period. To be fair, they could easily have
come out of the weekend with 0 points... or 4.

Vince Auger, Steve Wilson, and Chad Wilson are real players. I
don't think I'd be exaggerating in saying that Vince and Chad
were respectively the best forward and defenseman on the ice for
the Big Red. This is a much improved team from last year.

Ed Skazyk put together his first very strong game in a Cornell
uniform on Friday. Ed looked shaky in the first, but then made a
bunch of terrific saves down the stretch. The Dartmouth shot
total was quite inflated however. 46? Well, 36 - maybe.

Andy Bandurski was nothing short of sensational, saving
Cornell's collective butt (nice image, that) time and time again
against UVM. The Big Red defense made several serious lapses,
and Cornell constantly shot themselves in the skate, setting up
TEN Cat advantages. The UVM power play was unlucky,
and their forwards missed wide the several times they broke in
on net. Of course, Andy had a lot to do with that, being very
aggressive and just generally stealing the show.

The injury was very scary. Andy had just been writhing around
on the ice after apparently having his head slammed into the post
on a previous UVM rush. Off the next faceoff, he made an
outstanding save on a point blank shot from between the circles,
then suddenly crumpled - I didn't see a hit. The crowd booed,
thinking that Bandy was just trying to rag off some more time
(remember, this was 1 minute into the o.t. with Cornell down a
man), but the Red had actually started up ice 2 on 2 after the save,
so that was nonsense. When Bandy left and Ed came in (with
only a half-serious warm up), I for one was praying to preserve
the tie.

Which they did. Skazyk gave us one very hairy moment when he
was suddenly twenty feet up from the net with guys all over the
ice and UVM whacking at the puck, but the Cornell defense
really shone in the o.t., rallying in front of him and clearing the
zone when necessary.

Anyway, Cornell currently stands at .750, despite having
to open on the road. I hope the noise will be ear-splitting this
weekend when the Red host Hahvahd and Brown at Lynah.
These guys are young and inspired, and not a little talented. And
in the sophomores and freshmen especially, we may be seeing the
beginning of something special.

Hope the rest of the league enjoyed their one year vacation.
